What Needs To Be a Journalist
Even if it is often said that this is the generation of images and videos, 'words' still have a big
power in this highly civilized society. People get information through reading and share their
thoughts through writing. Books, magazines, and newspapers are still a major tool to express
thoughts and affect people. Since I personally believe in 'the pen is mightier than the sword', my
dream job is a journalist who writes to make society better. There are 3 major qualifications to be
a good journalist- writing skills, critical mind, and tenacity.
A journalist is a person who writes. This means that I need to write well if I want to be a
journalist. Good writing is about making people feel interested to read, helping understand the
matter easily, and persuading them to think about it. As for me, I'm not good enough now on
writing. To achieve this qualification, I need to read and practice writing as much as possible. Not
only this, taking notes whenever I come up with something such as good expressions or
important ideas will also help me improve my writing.
The second qualification to be a journalist is about 'critical mind'. A journalist should keep an
eye on every aspects of the society so that he or she can find any problems and criticize it right
away. I can say that I have it already. I usually have a broad curiosity over lots of matters. I often
look around and like to think about it. 'Is this system fair to everyone?' 'Does this policy really
make a situation better?' 'What is the best way to get improved on this matter?' These are
questions that I usually have when I watch news or read newspapers.
Last but not least is about 'tenacity'. I must have 'patience' if I want to be a journalist because
the problems on society are usually very complicated. It often takes a long time to get a big
picture of the matter. To know the truth, one should make his or her every effort on it. I am good
at being patient. And whenever I find something wrong about me, I try every way to fix the
problem. This makes me qualified since the attitude of not giving up easily is very important to
be a journalist.
To sum up, one should have good writing ability, think critically and have endurance to be a
good journalist. As for me, I have to improve my writing and study various things to understand
the society more deeply. These are not easy but I really want to be a person who can say 'what is
right' and 'what is wrong'. Staying focused is the only thing that I can do to pursue my dream job.
If I keep trying, I'm sure that I can be a good journalist.
Your writing is easy to read since it is well organized and described by clear vocabularies. Also I agree with the idea that good writing should be convincing, easily written, and understandable. Since your essay satisfies the 3 major criterias of good writing, I think you are already promising young journalist. I like your writing. Keep moving on it!
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, your writing contains everything to become a journalist! And these three abilities are exactly the reasons why I can't be a journalist... XD Your writing was well organized, and easily understandable!
ReplyDeleteYour main point seems to be "There are 3 major qualifications to be a good journalist- writing skills, critical mind, and tenacity."
The word "tenacity" struck me powerfully because it described exactly what you mean even though it was not a very familiar word to me.
Everything was clear to me.
If I could help you to change something for your second draft, it would be much better if you strengthen your topic sentences in your body paragraphs. Rather than just stating "The second qualification to be a journalist is about 'critical mind'", it would be great if you could rewrite those sentences with more details, like "A journalist should have 'critical mind' so that he or she can find any problems about the society and criticize it right away."
Overall your sentences are easy to understand! I really liked it.
