What Makes Me Qualified?
I'm 23 years old (22 international). What I wanted to be have changed several times so far. An admiral, a prosecutor, an interpreter, a police, and finally what I came up with is a professor in Spanish department. I've had this job in my mind since 2010, after reading a Spanish novel titled 'Niebla', which means 'fog' in English. And by now, I must think about whether I'll be qualified for this job or not, and I found 3 characteristics that make me fit in this career.
First, pursuit of knowledge towards Spanish linguistics and literature will be one of the 3 qualifications. This pursuit is not from a pressure that I need to teach the field but from deep in my heart, I want to read and study more and more. From the moment I stepped into this university, I got to have many friends from various cultural backgrounds especially from Latin America. For that I sought the related acquaintance, not only the language but also their culture. Despite the must-do things I have in my own life besides studying, I keep seeking knowledge.
Next, open mind to experiences that can happen in my life is the second important qualification. Professor need to be able to become a mentor when asked questions about life. Job, family affairs, relationships, and so on are maybe more important than just learning in school. So I try to have as many experiences as I can when it comes to jobs, physical activity, volunteering and meeting people. When it's piled up, I will be a decent advisor even if I cannot the solution for the questions from my students.
Last, the leadership I have will complete the trinity. This ability is totally needed to make people follow by getting credibility from them. If it's not with the 2 things above, I'll fail as a professor since they won't trust me fully. I'm currently in 3 circles – Bodybuilding, Rowing team, and Acting performance. And two out of three want me to be their leader since they give me confidence that I'm the right person for the position and I can do the job well. Besides these characteristics, I accept the diverse personalities of the group members and know how to deal with each one in different ways. Therefore I'm asked to be their leader. This can be applied to the students I'll be teaching and leading.
That's why I'm qualified for my dream job. Pursuit of knowledge, open mind to experiences, and the leadership I have. None of them should be excluded when it comes to educational jobs. There can be some other things I need to gain to excel in this field. Then, with my pursuit and open mind, I'd gladly learn to become a better professor.
First of all, I'd like to say that it is very impressive that you already recognized your own potential and spcefically decided which job to have. What I most like about your writing is use of the expression, "complete the trinity". It describes fulfillment of three criterias for being professor in refined and concise manner. Overall it is good writing. I like it!
ReplyDeletevery nice, natural hook and background information! I really liked your 'specific' examples like 'Niebla' and your circle experiences. These gave us an impression that you really have big interest on it! Also, the flow was very natural and easy to follow. Various vocabs were also good.
ReplyDeleteseems you forgot the verb in this sentence :D "even if I cannot the solution for the questions from my students." in the 2nd body paragraph.
