Three Abilities to Become a Successful Interpreter
Interpreting is speaking the speech in a language while listening to the speech in another language. Although this profession might look like an easy job that gets paid high money in relatively short period of time, it takes a lot of effort to be successful in this career. To become a successful interpreter, language fluency, intellectual curiosity, and ability to cope with stress are essential.
First and foremost, interpreters have to be fluent in source language as well as target language. To interpret successfully, interpreters have to be able to understand the content of the speech in source language, which is a language that is to be interpreted into another language. Then they can interpret it into target language, which is the language into which a speech spoken in another language is to be interpreted. For example, to interpret English speech into Korean, one must be fluent not only in English, but also in Korean.
Next, interpreters should have endless intellectual curiosity and never neglect studying. The society always changes and creates coinages. Unfortunately, interpreters can hardly interpret a speech on a topic with which they are not familiar. Therefore, interpreters should not be afraid of learning new topics and new words to make their career successful. For instance, an interpreter would not be able to interpret a speech about Twitter if he or she didn't know Twitter or new words on Twitter such as "follow" and "@".
Last but not least, interpreters should be able to deal with stress wisely. Since the intense concentration is needed to interpret, interpreters get enormous amount of stress in short period of time. According to the survey, interpreters found the stress as the biggest challenge in their career. They added it is recommended for every person who wants to be an interpreter to develop his or her own stress-relieving methods. To interpret with healthy mind and body, one should know how to deal with the stress.
To sum up, there are three important abilities to become an interpreter. First, one must be fluent in languages that he or she wants to interpret. Second, one should not stop learning new things. Finally, one should be able to relieve stress effectively. With these three factors, one can become a successful interpreter.

ReplyDeleteI see you wrote about the abilities needed to be a good interpreter. I found this topic interesting since I'm also interested in interpretation.
The introduction is brief but solid. But I think there are too much commas in the last sentence and they are kind of distracting. How about changing a little bit by using colon like "In order to become a successful interpreter, three things are definitely needed: language fluency, intellectual curiosity, and ability to cope with stress."
For first body paragraph, I like that you explained what source language and target language are. But I can't fully understand the sentence "Then they can interpret ~ to be interpreted." I just think it would be much better if you make this clearer with only one 'which.' In the third body paragraph I think it's better to add 'that' in front of "it is recommended for every person ~ methods."
I think it's good that you restated the introduction in the conclusion with different words. The conclusion is clear and easy to understand.
Overall, I think your writing is well organized and your choice of words is good, as always. Also it is neat and explicit. I like that you tried to use different words for same meaning which I think very good. I especially like that you showed examples in each body paragraph. The words 'cope', 'neglect, and 'coinages' struck me powerfully.

wow you really seem to know what it takes to be an interpreter exactly! fluency, curiosity, and stress-managing skills! I really liked how you categorized it. The Twitter example was also appropriate!
ReplyDeleteBut I think the 1st body paragraph seems too complicated. There are too many 'language' and 'interpret' words. It seems a little bit distracting ... hard to focus on it @_@... or redundant.
But except that, it was very clear and well-organized!
