Every voting season, lots of media report the low voting rate these days. It is not surprising that modern people keep losing their interests in politics due to many factors. In this situation, some people even argue that voting needs to be mandatory. However, I think voting should not be mandatory for several reasons.
First, I want to point out that those people who don't vote have some reasonable reasons. They don't want to vote not just because they feel it's burdensome but they are against the 'voting' itself. They stop voting because they realized that voting doesn't make the society better. They don't believe politicians anymore because they are always disappointing people! Politicians should show first that they are changed before just making voting mandatory.
Moreover, there are some people who can't vote due to circumstances. For example, if some unexpected things such as emergency, accidents, etc happen to someone, it is not possible for him or her to vote. Also, there are some people who can't move by himself or herself freely because they are ill or something. It's not fair for them to make voting mandatory. Not all people are free enough to go voting.
Lastly, let's assume that voting became mandatory. But does that make any difference? People who are not interested in politics don't vote. Do they really start to feel interested on it suddenly because voting became mandatory? Obviously it is not! They still don't care who to vote for politicians. So they are going to choose anyone or even no one. This can worsen the situation. The outcome might not represent true interests of people in a society as a whole. The result can be distorted due to these 'uninterested' votes.
For these reasons, I don't think 'the mandatory voting' is a good idea. To induce more people to participate in politics, bring what people had expected first. Give credibility to people that voting can change the society for better. This is much more effective and valuable way to raise a voting rate than just making voting mandatory.
I agree with your opinion on mandatory voting.
ReplyDeleteInstead of forcing people to vote, politicians should be trustable - it seems to be your idea here. But the 2nd body paragraph doesn't seem connected to your overall idea. You need to include some supporting statements in the 2nd or the conclusion paragraph.

To begin with, there is one problem that we can easily think of if voting becomes mandatory. There are some people who can’t vote due to circumstances. For example, if some unexpected things such as emergency, accidents happen to someone, it is not possible for him or her to vote. It is just out of their control. Also, there are some people who can’t move by himself or herself freely because they are ill or something. It’s not fair for them to make voting mandatory. Not all people are free enough to go voting.
More substantially, I want to point out that those people who don’t vote have some reasonable reasons on their actions. They don’t want to vote not just because they feel it’s burdensome but they are against the ‘voting’ itself. They stop voting because they realized that voting doesn’t make the society better at all. They don’t believe politicians anymore because they are always disappointing people! Politicians should show first that they are changed before just making voting mandatory.
