Causes of happiness

I ask myself all the time, "Am I happy?" But I always have no answer for that question. For me, it is much easier to find causes of unhappiness. With that, I can even write a book. Then I ask myself again what makes me happy. And I think these 3 cause happiness. They are people we love, things we like to do, and little incidents in normal life.

First, being around people we love causes happiness. For example, when I am with my friends or family I find myself smiling and laughing all the time. They make me feel comfortable and they do not let me stay unhappy. Sometimes I feel blue and sad, and then they somehow manage to make me laugh and feel better by telling me some jokes or stories, and doing stuffs like making funny faces or dancing crazy. They just do not give me time to stay unhappy. So this is one thing that makes me happy.

Second, people feel happy by doing what they like. Some people like to spend their time on reading books or experiencing extreme sports, and other might find happiness in their works. We all have different things we like to do. The reason why they are doing stuffs like that is to feel happy and satisfaction. For example, I like watching entertainment programs or American drams or movies. When I am watching them I feel so happy to enjoy my hobbies. Also I feel there is nothing right now that can stop me from being happy.

Last, I think we find happiness in little incidents happening in our normal lives. If you are a college student, and what would make you happy? For me, I would say the message 'no lecture for the day'. For example, it means you wake up in the morning and get message on your mobile phone that tells you there are no classes for today due to the MT of the English Department. I would feel thrilled beyond the happiness. Or you are really running late for school and feel that you might not get on the train on time, and you get into the station and find the train still staying in the station like it has been waiting for you to get in. How do you feel then?

The causes of happiness are all different from all other people. I say family and friends make me happy, but others might say they are just pain and work is a real happiness. What do you think causes happiness? As a result, I would say people we love, things we love to do, and small happy incidents in our lives make me happy.

  1. First of all, I enjoyed your writing!

I like your hook sentence, asking to yourself. I totally agree with you that it's much easier to find causes of unhappiness. I just think it would be better if you change 'And I think these 3 cause happiness' to 'In my opinion, the following things cause happiness.' Your first body paragraph very similar with my second body paragraph. I also wrote that being in a good relationship with people we love makes us happy. I really agree with you here. Maybe it's better to change 'Sometimes I feel blue and sad, and then they ~ some jokes or stories, and doing stuffs ~ crazy.' into 'Also, when I feel blue and sad, they somehow ~ by telling me some jokes or by doing stuffs ~ crazy.'

In the second body paragraph, I like the last sentence. I think it expresses emotion interstingly. In third body paragraph, I found the sentence 'Or you are really running ~ waiting for you to get in' too long. It would be better if you divide this into two sentences and removed some 'and’. Also, I like that you restated your points in the conclusion.

Overall, I think your writing is well organized and interesting.

  2. Fist, thanks for sharing your essay with us!

The first thing I thought was this is a well-organized piece of writing. You have an interesting introduction, 3 body paragraphs and a conclusion. And I deeply agree with your ideas of what cause happiness and I have great sympathy especially for the third one.

But I think the word ‘incident’ is not suitable in this essay. Because, an incident usually indicating something that is unpleasant. But you intended happy one, right? So, how about change it into the word ‘surprise’? Because, ‘no lecture for the day' message and train that still staying in the station are both something unexpected but actually happened surprisingly :)

Also I feel there is nothing that time that can stop me from being happy.
