What should a government do for a country to become successful?

What should a government do for a country to become successful?

Does a government mean just an administrative group collecting tax from its citizens? Few people might say “yes”. As time goes by, a government’s well timed role is becoming important because everything is changing so fast around the world. Not just strong economic power, but also considerable soft power is required for being a successful country with a wide acclaim from citizens.

First of all, economy is one of the most important sections that all governments in the world work for. In my opinion, a government should find the “best way” to develop its economy. The best way does not mean just following other nations’ successful cases, because each country has different economic background and industrial structure. It is really crucial to find the policy that fits for each nation’s economic feature. For example, former Brazil president Lula chose and followed policies which were necessary for developing Brazil’s economy and encouraging citizens to work. He did not copy policies that other countries clung to. Consequentially, Brazil made a huge economic growth rates and President Lula finished its term with a great honor.

Secondly, governments need to focus on the way to enhance its soft power. Soft power is political term which means the ability to obtain what one wants through co-option and attraction. It can be contrasted with 'hard power', which is the use of coercion and payment. Crucial element for better international relations has been changed from strong military power in the Cold war period to “attractiveness” mentioned above in these days. For example, the United States is one of nations which have really powerful soft power. It means other countries’ citizens who even have no interest on political issues or international relations between their countries and the U.S. think of America very friendly. They consume made in U.S. products, watch Hollywood movies and love pop stars, they might consider to study abroad in the U.S. This story is confined to only one nation: the U.S. It is the way world is changing. We can find another example in Hallyu-Korean wave syndrome over the world. Hallyu based on Korean dramas or K-pops remind worldwide fans of Korean culture and trip to Korea. This is why a government should not forget its own culture or other attractiveness to enhance its soft power.

  1. To Dasom Yoo From Nam Alexander/Assignment (What should a government do for a country to become successful?)

What I like about this piece of writing is that author wrote two ideas of how government can succeed by supporting that ideas by quite good examples.

My main point seems to be a full support the idea, that governments do not have to apply the same policies (even successful) as another country. As it usually done by IMF which tries to apply the same fiscal and other policies to the totally different countries.

The first thing I liked is the sentence "The best way does not mean just following other nations’ successful cases, because each country has different economic background and industrial structure." As i told before it is a good argument not to follow. And this argument can be supported by various cases.
The second thing I liked is the word expression "cling to", because I have never used it in my writings and because I saw that for the first time. In my case I would like to use "hold firmly", but usage of "cling to" sounds much better. When I pronounce it it sounds strong argument should be emphasized. It emphasizes the example very well.
And another expression I liked is "should not forget culture". This is the strongest point. I liked it because it shows, that whatever government is doing it should not forget its roots and the roots of its nation, even in our globalized world.

The essay is good. It is has some another approach of writing which make feel that whatever the government does, the primary thing is its own nation, background...

But I have some troubles with understanding of "Hallyu". I think it is better to put it in "". And give some another meaning like " Korean Wave" or may be "Korean Cultural Wave".

And it would be fine if the author finished it by concluding the essay.

Good essay and good addition to my thoughts about government.

  3. First of all, I enjoyed your writing!
Since I wrote about different topic, your writing was interesting to me.
I like that you showed many examples supporting your point in each body paragraph. It helped me understand better.
Also, I like that you used academic vocabulary.
Your introduction was attrative and interesting too.
However, I think a conclusion is missing in your writing and the sentences are little bit too complicated that they are kind of distractive. It might be better if you wrote your conclusion and make sentences more concise and explicit.

    2nd Draft

Does a government mean just an administrative group collecting tax from its citizens? Few people might say “yes”. He did not copy policies that other countries clung to. Consequentially, Brazil made a huge economic growth rates and President Lula finished its term with a great honor. If the president Lula just followed the former economic policy or other nations' successful cases, Brazil could not make such progress.

Secondly, governments need to focus on the way to enhance its soft power. Soft power is political term which means the ability to obtain what one wants through co-option and attraction. It can be contrasted with 'hard power', which is the use of coercion and payment. The government role for its country is getting important and complex in 21century, it cannot be admirable without various strategies for each challenge that the government encounters. As mentioned above, to make a successful country, government need to care about the economic policy which fits its own economic structure and soft power, not just military power. To achieve a successful progress with all of the three parts above is really difficult, but without efforts for those, the nation would be isolated in international society.
