Sometimes people think about their hometown. For those who are living in a foreign land, this nostalgic yearning is felt more significant. Those memories and longings for return become to grow as much as a tough day continued more. To these people, Chooseok, the traditional feast, is a good day to meet the needs for a long time. To meet their family members, they go through the bump-to-bump highway, then finally arrive in there. Among them, people revive the forgotten traditional culture of Korea.
Food has the best priority in family celebration. In Chooseok, many traditional dishes are cooked. People drinks Soju and Makgeoli, the Korean traditional rice wine, instead of beer or whiskey. Galbi, seasoned steamed-pork rip, has set on the fully-served table instead of steak. Also, dishes which cannot be easily cooked such as Sanjeok(skewered meat), Tteok(rice cake), Goolbi(salted croaker) are being reserved. While eating the food, people ask each other and slip into their recollections.
After that, Jesa, the memorial ceremony in Korea, begins. In the morning of Chooseok, all of family members dress neatly and meet together. Someone even wears 'Hanbok', the Korean dress, difficult to see at other times. Then they bow to their ancestors and give the drinks to them. Next, they get off the home and go to the Seonsan, the mountain which has ancestor`s grave. In front of graves, people bow again, and chat about their gone families.
Jesa ends, then it`s time to the alive. Among their families, they talk about themselves because all of family members cannot easily meet at once. As one said stereotypical themes, someone starts to sing a old trot song, and they sing along. Of course, there has some of tone deaf, but everyone sings because its lyric contains their feelings and sorrows of life. Through the song, people soothe their live and gain the hope to carry on.
Three days of the holiday season, like sweets, finally ended. Pledged not to make an appointment, members spread out nationwide. But the Koreans reaffirm through the Chooseok that there are families who still love. In an dreary era of infinite competition, Chooseok works as a friend who give comfort in modern people`s life.

ReplyDeleteI think this essay has the background information about what koreans feel when they think of Chooseok or what meaning Chooseok has for koreans. (And I think it would be more informative if it includes informaion about 'what Chooseok is' or 'When Chooseok is'.) All the body paragraphs are presenting a process appropriately. They are in a logical sequence. But I think the thesis statement is missing. You can put the sentence identifying the overall process briefly at the end of the introduction. :)

ReplyDeleteFrom my personal point of view, it is a good essay, especially by emphasizing the feelings of people toward this holiday. Thesis statement is clearly shown " people revive the forgotten traditional culture of Korea ".
Your background is good. because I was able understand the background of this holiday and how people need it. To summarize it I understood that it is quite ancient and precious holiday for the korean people and at this holiday they have chance to meet their needs and meet each other.
It has a good logic. I liked it because I could clearly see the process how korean people carry out it. yes it shows a different part of the process. The process is cooking, memorial ceremony and talk between family members.
I think that details are sufficient.
For me the conclusion is a kind of evaluation telling what people feel and show toward this holiday and holiday's role.
Your thesis statement is clear to understand, and I like your topic and following body paragraph about that topic. your essay is very well organized and friendly explaining about 추석. It think someone who don't know about 추석 can easily understand the meaning. and you have many facts and definition on your body paragraphs.
